Modesty & Fitness

Oh how pretty does the fitness industry seam! Ass`s so peachy they look like something Roald Dahl wrote about. Wonderful sculpting leggings playing on the thighs like a roller coaster ride. We`ve gone curve mad and it`s fantastic! I love it!

But… as a Fit-Pro, a Muslim woman and a mom, putting myself out there like that? It`s just not for me.
In fact, it`s still just not for a lot of us!
Not all of us are comfortable showing so much of ourselves in a bid to tell our health and fitness stories or to ‘inspire’ others and believe me when I say it`s not necessarily a confidence issue either. I feel so sexy!… too sexy for my shirt even! (Right said Fred-1992. Showing my age now)

In all seriousness though, I just don’t want the kind of attention that follows that self exposure. I already have enough happy lads trying to slip into my DM`s as it is, I dread to think what it would be like if I unleashed my sexy self onto the world! I imagine myself like Danny Boyle on the opening scene of 28 weeks later!

But going shopping for sports performance apparel is a horror movie all of its own. Almost everything is skin tight and yeah I get the science behind some of it but I don’t see why that stops a decent amount of modest sports performance apparel making it onto our shop rails.

People like me end up piecing together leggings with a tennis skirt or boxing shorts. Long sleeved running tops layered with an oversized mens shirt. Some of us just avoid the womens sections all together as it doesn’t really accommodate the requirements of modest fitness! The modest health and fitness scene hasn’t been too pretty, let`s face it!

However now, we are seeing what looks like some promising break throughs!

It just may be a while until we see more stylish modest fitness apparel in our stores but for now, here`s a list of my top 5 online recommendations:

1) www.modanisa.com
Although most of their tracksuits are cotton and generally more aimed at causal streetwear they do still have a range of polyester mix fabrics to support sports performance needs.
2) www.nashata.com
It might get a bit tricky figuring out the prices in your own currency for some, but get past that and you`ve got a great collection from their sports skirt to their yoga suit.
3) www.mumine.co
Boasting the use of coolfit technology in their fabrics Mumine do have some great functional wear. Give these guys time to build on their collection and it could become a dominating brand for modest sports performance and fitness apparel.
4) www.shukr.com
A bit on the pricey side with their made to order procedures however maybe, it`s justified as Shukr are delivering great style with their active wear.
5) www.veilgarments.com
Now Veil have kept things simple and classic by offering just a few pieces in a great range of colours, good for outdoor activities or instructors who want to stand out in their sessions. Great fabric mixes and they even accommodate with an interest free instalment plan so lack of funds need not be an issue.

Well until I launch my own Modest fitness apparel I hope this will suffice and if you`re a provider of fitness apparel, maybe it`s time to consider adding some modest wear to your collection too.
